Watering Guide for Clones
Overwatering is the number one killer of clones. Without an established root system, clones cannot process large amounts of water — excess moisture suffocates the developing root zone and invites disease.
The Golden Rule
Keep the medium moist, not wet. There is a significant difference. Moist means the medium holds some moisture but still has air pockets. Wet means it is saturated with no airflow.
How to Water Clones
- Use pH-balanced water — target 6.0–6.5 pH for soil, 5.5–6.0 pH for coco/hydro
- Water lightly around the base of the stem, not directly on it
- Allow the top 1–2cm of medium to dry slightly between waterings
- Mist leaves twice daily while roots are developing — this is their primary water source pre-root
Water Temperature
Use room temperature water (20–22°C). Cold water shocks the root zone and slows development. Never use water straight from a cold tap.
Signs of Overwatering
- Drooping leaves that feel firm and full (not limp)
- Yellowing lower leaves
- Soggy, compacted medium
- Foul smell from the medium
Signs of Underwatering
- Drooping leaves that feel thin and papery
- Dry, pulling-away-from-pot medium
- Rapid wilting even under good humidity
EC & Nutrients in Water
During the first 7 days, use plain pH-balanced water only. Clones do not need nutrients until roots are established. Introducing nutrients too early causes salt buildup and tip burn.
