Common Issues & Troubleshooting for Clones

Even with the best care, issues can arise. This guide helps you quickly identify what's wrong and how to fix it before it becomes a serious problem.

Wilting / Drooping

Cause: Most commonly low humidity, heat stress, or transplant shock.
Fix: Increase RH to 75–80%, check temperature, and place under a humidity dome. Most clones recover within 12–24 hours.

Yellowing Leaves

Lower leaves yellowing: Normal during rooting — the plant is redirecting energy. Remove cleanly.
Upper leaves yellowing: Could indicate nitrogen deficiency, pH issues, or overwatering. Check your pH and watering frequency first.

Slow or No Rooting

Cause: Temperature too low, humidity too low, or medium too wet.
Fix: Ensure root zone is 20–24°C, RH is 75–85%, and medium is moist not wet. Do not disturb the clone — patience is key.

Brown or Crispy Leaf Tips

Cause: Nutrient burn, low humidity, or light stress.
Fix: If feeding, flush and reduce nutrient strength. Increase humidity and check light distance.

Stem Rot at the Base

Cause: Overwatering, poor drainage, or damping off fungus.
Fix: No cure once stem rot sets in. Discard affected clones, sterilise equipment, and improve drainage and airflow for the next batch.

Grey Fuzzy Growth (Botrytis)

Cause: High humidity with poor airflow.
Fix: Remove all affected material immediately. Increase airflow, reduce humidity slightly, and ensure the dome is vented.

Leaves Curling Upward

Cause: Heat stress or light intensity too high.
Fix: Raise the light fixture, reduce intensity, and check ambient temperature. Target 22–26°C.

Leaves Curling Downward (Clawing)

Cause: Nitrogen toxicity or overwatering.
Fix: If feeding, reduce nutrient strength immediately. Check watering frequency and allow medium to partially dry between waterings.
