Lighting Guide for Clones

Light is essential for photosynthesis, but too much too soon will stress unrooted clones. The goal is to provide enough light to sustain the clone without pushing it harder than it can handle without roots.

Light Schedule

Run an 18/6 schedule (18 hours on, 6 hours off) for clones. This mimics long vegetative days and keeps clones in a growth state without triggering flowering.

Light Intensity

  • Days 1–7: Low intensity — 150–300 PPFD. Indirect or diffused light is ideal.
  • Days 7–14: Moderate intensity — 300–500 PPFD as roots develop.
  • Post-root: Gradually increase to 500–800 PPFD for early veg growth.

Best Light Types for Clones

  • LED (low wattage): Best option — low heat, full spectrum, energy efficient
  • T5 fluorescent: Classic clone light, gentle and effective
  • CFL: Budget-friendly and suitable for small clone setups
  • Avoid HPS/MH at close range — too much heat and intensity for unrooted clones

Light Distance

Keep LEDs 45–60cm above clones during early rooting. Adjust based on manufacturer recommendations and clone response. If leaves are curling upward, the light is too close or too intense.

Signs of Light Stress

  • Upward leaf curl — too much intensity or heat
  • Bleaching or white tips — light burn, raise the fixture
  • Stretching toward the light — too far away, lower the fixture
