Humidity & Environment for Clones

Getting the environment right is the single most important factor in clone success. Clones have no roots yet — they absorb moisture entirely through their leaves, making humidity critical.

Ideal Humidity Levels

  • Days 1–7 (pre-root): 75–85% RH — use a humidity dome
  • Days 7–14 (rooting): 65–75% RH — begin venting the dome
  • Post-root: 55–65% RH — transition to normal vegetative conditions

Temperature

Maintain ambient temperatures between 22–26°C. Avoid cold drafts or heat spikes. Root zone temperature is equally important — aim for 20–24°C at the medium level.

Using a Humidity Dome

A humidity dome traps moisture around the leaves while roots develop. Vent it slightly after day 5 to prevent mould buildup. Remove it fully once roots are visible.

Airflow

Gentle airflow is beneficial — it strengthens stems and prevents stagnant air that leads to mould. Use a small fan on the lowest setting, never blowing directly onto clones.

Common Environmental Mistakes

  • Too low humidity — causes rapid wilting and leaf curl
  • Too high humidity without airflow — causes grey mould (botrytis)
  • Temperature swings — stresses clones and slows rooting
  • Cold windowsills or concrete floors — chills the root zone
