Long-Term Genetic Preservation

One of the greatest advantages of working with clones is the ability to preserve exceptional genetics indefinitely. A single mother plant can produce hundreds of genetically identical clones over its lifetime — locking in the exact traits you love.

The Mother Plant

A mother plant is a plant kept permanently in the vegetative stage for the sole purpose of producing clones. It is never flowered. Kept healthy, a mother can produce clones for years.

  • Keep mothers under an 18/6 or 24/0 light schedule to prevent flowering
  • Feed with a nitrogen-rich vegetative nutrient formula
  • Prune regularly to encourage bushy growth and multiple clone sites
  • Repot annually or when rootbound

Selecting a Mother Plant

Not every plant makes a good mother. Select mothers based on:

  • Vigorous, healthy growth with no signs of disease or pest susceptibility
  • Desirable genetic traits — structure, aroma, potency, yield potential
  • Strong cloning ability — some genetics root faster and more reliably than others

Cloning Cycles

Take clones from your mother on a regular cycle to maintain a steady supply. A well-managed mother can be cloned every 3–4 weeks. Always leave enough growth on the mother to recover before the next cloning session.

Rejuvenating an Old Mother

Over time, mothers can become woody and less productive. Signs include slow new growth, reduced clone success rates, and increased susceptibility to stress. At this point, consider taking clones from the best existing clones to create a new, younger mother — this is called “cloning the clone.”

Storing Clones Short-Term

If you need to pause your grow cycle, freshly taken clones can be stored in a cloning solution (like Clonex or similar) in a cool, dark environment for up to 48–72 hours before being placed into a rooting medium. This is useful for shipping and logistics.
