Pest & Disease Prevention for Clones
Clones are more vulnerable to pests and disease than established plants because they lack a strong immune response and root system. Prevention is always better than treatment — a clean environment is your best defence.
Preventative Practices
- Always start with clean equipment — sterilise scissors, trays, and domes between uses
- Use fresh, sterile growing medium for every new batch of clones
- Maintain proper airflow — stagnant air is where disease thrives
- Quarantine new clones before introducing them to an existing grow space
- Inspect clones daily, especially the undersides of leaves
Common Pests
- Spider Mites: Tiny dots on leaves, fine webbing underneath. Treat with neem oil or insecticidal soap. Increase humidity — mites hate it.
- Fungus Gnats: Small flies around the medium. Caused by overwatering. Let the top layer dry out and use yellow sticky traps.
- Aphids: Soft-bodied insects on new growth. Remove by hand or treat with diluted neem oil spray.
- Thrips: Silver streaks or stippling on leaves. Treat with spinosad or neem oil.
- Whitefly: Tiny white insects that fly when disturbed. Use yellow sticky traps and neem oil.
Common Diseases
- Grey Mould (Botrytis): Fuzzy grey growth on stems or leaves. Caused by high humidity with poor airflow. Remove affected material immediately and improve ventilation.
- Powdery Mildew: White powdery coating on leaves. Treat with potassium bicarbonate or diluted hydrogen peroxide spray. Reduce humidity.
- Damping Off: Stem collapses at the base. Caused by overwatering and poor drainage. No cure — prevention through proper watering is essential.
Safe Treatment Options for Clones
Use gentle, organic treatments on clones — harsh chemical pesticides can damage sensitive unrooted cuttings. Neem oil (diluted), insecticidal soap, and hydrogen peroxide (3% diluted to 1%) are all safe options when used correctly.
