Nutrient & Feeding Basics for Clones

Clones are sensitive to nutrients in their early stages. Feeding too early or too heavily is one of the most common mistakes new growers make. This guide covers when to start, what to use, and how much.

When to Start Feeding

Do not feed nutrients for the first 7–10 days. Clones absorb water through their leaves pre-root and cannot process nutrients without an established root system. Plain pH-balanced water only during this phase.

Begin light feeding once roots are visible and the clone is actively growing new leaves.

Starting Nutrient Strength

  • Start at 25–50% of the recommended dose on your nutrient label
  • Target an EC of 0.8–1.2 mS/cm for early veg clones
  • Gradually increase over 2–3 weeks as the plant establishes

Key Nutrients for Clones

  • Nitrogen (N): Primary driver of leafy green growth — most important in veg
  • Phosphorus (P): Supports root development — slightly elevated P during rooting phase helps
  • Potassium (K): Overall plant health and stress resistance
  • Calcium & Magnesium: Essential micronutrients, especially under LED lighting

pH When Feeding

  • Soil: 6.0–6.5 pH
  • Coco coir: 5.8–6.2 pH
  • Hydro/DWC: 5.5–6.0 pH

Signs of Nutrient Issues

  • Tip burn / brown tips: Nutrient excess or salt buildup — flush and reduce dose
  • Yellowing between veins: Magnesium deficiency — add Cal-Mag
  • Overall pale yellow: Nitrogen deficiency — increase N slightly
  • Dark green, clawing leaves: Nitrogen toxicity — reduce feeding immediately
